How Agile is different than Scrum

Many times I get to here people saying words Agile & Scrum interchangeably. Answering the question What is agile ? with answer as Scrum is observed often so lets discuss today how different they are.

First of all Scrum is Agile but Agile is not Scrum simple, its much more than that. Scrum is a type of agile but agile in itself is a mindset. So classifying scrum as one of the subset of Agile umbrella can be accepted.

Oops moment : Here there is clear evidence of Inheritance My Lord 👀👥

Agile is mindset detailing some rules for project execution whereas scrum is one of framework which follow this agile mindset in its own way. By the way scrum also has few siblings like Kanban, XP, SAFe, DDSM, Lean etc. But one thing is for sure Scrum is one of the most popular child of this Agile family who has brought name & fame to his proud father Mr. Agile .

Now I would like to draw parallels with one of my favorite sport Cricket (In India cricket always remains to be first Love even though to whomsoever you are married with ) .Cricket is sport having few defined rules and multiple versions of it like fifty overs, T20, Test Cricket etc. As T20 is type of Cricket but Cricket is not just T20 its much more than that. In similar way Scrum is Agile but Agile is not just Scrum.

Agile is like Cricket and Scrum, XP, Kanban are its versions like Fifty Overs, T20 & Test Cricket.

As every version has it own set of rules abiding to basic principles of Cricket similarly scrum has its own rulebook having essence of Agile .

So next time be cautious before saying Agile is Scrum. But you can definitely say that Scrum is one of the versions of Agile. ✌😊
